Review – Admiral of the Windrush

This was a very sad piece of theatre. Shakespeare sad. A tragedy, on a stage upon which we all played a part. From the reluctant welcome of the original black Windrush passengers, bus drivers, NHS workers, pushed into low standard accommodation, rooms, crowded and cold, to the hostile environment created by Theresa May, to the who gives a shite attitude of most of us, to the Kafkaesque nightmare of families, here for 50 years or more, with children and grandchildren, required now, to prove to the Home office who they were and where they have been, in order to stay in the country to which they have devoted their lives, to which they are as loyal as any Englishman or woman, with the possible exception of when they support the West Indies cricket team.
This is such an important and emotional piece of theatre. Poignant, tragic. The Admiral came on the Windrush, aged just 12, and here he is, turned 70, having to search his papers to prove who he is, what he did, where he’s been or face deportation.
There are no laughs, no comedic scenes, no joy, but as a piece of theater this is about as good as it gets. If you care just a little bit ab out how we treated these immigrants from Barbados and the West Indies, just a little bit, then don’t miss this powerful and historically important piece of Fringe drama.

  1. We should all, and I really mean ALL, be ashamed! Whenever I hear that an enquiry will be instituted and will report in X months, or years, I want to go and lead the responsible people by their ears and say NOW – DO IT NOW! Realistically I know that I will be long dead and gone and still there will be no resolution to so many things that could, fairly easily and cheaply, have been sorted out long ago!

  2. The ‘hostile environment’ of Theresa May was specifically directed at ILLEGAL immigrants, and was a continuation of Labour’s policy directed toward the same
